Speed kills

The Via Rail train that derailed near my home in Burlington Ontario this past weekend—killing three workers and injuring dozens of passengers—was travelling more than four times the allowable speed as it switched tracks. This according to a preliminary investigation by the Transportation Safety Board.

Tom Griffith, the investigator in charge, said that the passenger train was travelling at 107 km per hour on Sunday as it switched tracks. Adding, that the train’s black box “revealed that brakes were not applied” to slow the train down before switching tracks. (Source)
