The U.K.’s Daily Mail reports that for a leaflet advising staff on how to deal with the public, Caerphilly County Borough Council in South Wales has adopted the Valleys Race Equality Council’s, a publicly-funded organization, views that the term “British” is offensiveness and should be avoided. The leaflet entitled Equalities in the Delivery of Council Services states:
The idea of ‘British’ implies a false sense of unity—many Scots, Welsh and Irish resist being called British and the land denoted by the term contains a wide variety of cultures, languages and religions.
British social trends tend to find their way to Canadian shores with about a ten year lag. I can hardly wait for the time when we will be asked to avoid the use of the term “Canadian” as a catch-all when referring to people in the multicultural GTA.
